Khareef season
From late June to early September the Dhofar monsoon turns Salalah green — the most rewarding driving season in Oman.
The khareef is Salalah's signature season: monsoon mist rolls in from the Arabian Sea, temperatures settle in the mid-twenties, and the hills, wadis and coastal plains turn a deep green you will not find anywhere else on the peninsula. It is also the season when having your own car matters most — the best moments happen along the way, at fog-wrapped passes, viewpoints and roadside fruit stalls that no tour timetable can plan for. A green valley in the hills above Taqah, Wadi Darbat is Dhofar's favourite picnic ground — seasonal waterfalls and a calm lake during the khareef, grazing camels and shady trees for much of the year. It is an easy paved drive east of the city.
West of Salalah, Al Mughsail's long sandy beach runs for kilometres beneath dramatic limestone cliffs. Time your visit with a rising sea and the Marneef blowholes send seawater metres into the air — and the clifftop coastal road beyond is one of southern Oman's great drives.
On the Salalah shorefront, the Al Baleed Archaeological Park protects the ruins of the medieval port of Zafar, once a hub of the frankincense trade. Together with the Museum of the Frankincense Land beside it, the site anchors UNESCO's Land of Frankincense listing — an unhurried couple of hours between beach and city stops.
The switchback drive up Jebel Samhan is Dhofar's classic mountain run, climbing from the coastal plain to a clifftop viewpoint high above Mirbat. The plateau is a protected home of the rare Arabian leopard, and in khareef you often break through the cloud line into sunshine with the mist spread out below.
